Beyond town, the beaches line the south coast. The hotels below run in one line, from the closest to Little Venice to the farthest. The first few are a walk from dinner. Little Venice is about 550 meters downhill, a walk of six or seven minutes. No hotel on this list sits closer to the sunset. White marble floors, muslin curtains and pink bougainvillea set the mood. The Michelin Guide calls the design "elegantly restrained." By the pool, Matsuhisa Mykonos serves Nobu's Japanese and Peruvian menu. For a splurge, book the Belvedere Mansion. It has its own pool and two terraces facing the sunset. Some rooms sit in a hilltop annex, a short free shuttle ride away, so check which building the booking is in. The pool closes at 5 p.m., which suits guests heading out for the evening anyway.
Best for: Travelers who want Little Venice on foot and a serious dinner at the hotel.
2. Semeli Hotel
π Location: Edge of Mykonos Town, near the Fabrika bus station
Free valet parking is rare in Mykonos Town. Semeli has it, in a garage under the hotel. The Old Port is about five minutes away on foot, and Little Venice about seven. Two restaurants share the hill. Thioni serves creative Greek cooking at a single 9 p.m. sitting, so book it early. Krama is the fine dining room. The infinity pool is unheated, but a smaller garden pool stays warm all year. On cooler nights, the Executive Suite Sea View has a covered, heated hot tub on its terrace. The hotel spreads over several levels, which makes it a poor fit for guests with limited mobility. It opens in early February and stays open until the middle of December, longer than most of the island.

Breakfast is ordered from a menu, not a buffet, and it comes with the room. The hotel sits about 250 meters above Megali Ammos, a beach with no sunbeds or clubs. Nero Nero is a single table for two on a wooden deck at the hotel's beach, opened only for that couple. Book it for the night that matters. For something bigger, dinner can be cooked on board the hotel's yacht. Music plays underwater in the saltwater pool, which has a glass front, while a smaller freshwater pool sits higher up among the gardens. A purple front door and colored lights greet guests, and art and antiques fill the halls. One signature suite has its own glass-fronted pool. The beach is narrow and pebbly. There is also a steam room and, unusually, a squash court. Stairs link the hillside and there is no lift. Ornos has no taxi rank, so book rides into town ahead.

A private wooden jetty sends the resort's own boats out to Delos, Rhenia and the beach clubs. Behind it, the resort climbs a slope like a small Mykonian village. Oasis, the adults-only seawater pool, has a few cabanas that seem to float on the water. The beach is long and sandy, though the wind can whip it up on a meltemi day. To save on stairs, book a suite with a private pool near beach level. Elais serves Mediterranean food, and Buddha-Bar Beach keeps going late with Asian fusion. Food and drink prices run very high, even by Mykonos standards. Town is about ten minutes by car, and the airport shuttle is free.

Before Booking Mykonos
The meltemi blows from June to September and peaks in July and August. Ferries can run hours late, and some sailings are cancelled. Leave a spare day before a flight out of Athens. The island has only about 30 licensed taxis, and most take cash. Book transfers through the hotel before landing.
From late spring to early autumn, water taxis link Ornos and Platis Gialos with Paradise, Super Paradise and Elia. Boats to Delos leave the Old Port all year and take about half an hour, with more departures from May to October. For a sunset away from the Little Venice crowds, drive to the Armenistis lighthouse on the northwest tip. The last stretch is a rough dirt road, so arrange the ride back first. At dinner, order kopanisti, the island's peppery spreadable cheese. Then try louza, sun-dried cured pork sliced thin.
