Maldives: A Thousand Islands, Each Its Own World
In the Maldives, the island is the trip. There is no town to wander into and no neighborhood to explore, so the reef and the restaurants come bundled with the booking, along with however long it takes to get there. The ten luxury resorts below are grouped by the kind of trip they suit, not by atoll, and each was checked against current guest ratings and published reviews.
Transfers shape a Maldives holiday more than almost anything else. Seaplanes fly only in daylight, and their departure times are usually fixed once guests land at Malé, so an evening arrival can mean an unplanned night near the airport. Resorts served by speedboat sidestep the problem, and those reached by a domestic flight mostly do too. Resort bills are commonly settled in US dollars, so changing money into rufiyaa beforehand is rarely necessary. Rates peak in the December to April high season, when the ranges below stretch toward their upper end.
Sorting the Islands by Trip
Honeymoons. Design-led villas and all-inclusive plans that spare a first trip together from constant decisions.
Anniversaries and special occasions. Larger islands with several restaurants, built for couples who want variety across a longer stay.
Quiet seclusion. Smaller footprints and unusual villa types, with space between guests prioritized over scale.
Short transfers. Resorts reached by speedboat or a domestic flight, for trips where losing a day to logistics would hurt.
The 10 Best Luxury Resorts in the Maldives
🌺 For Honeymoons & First Trips Together
Kuramathi and Cocoon both make romance easy, one through sheer size and the other through Italian design.
1. Kuramathi Maldives
Location: Rasdhoo Atoll, Ari Atoll region
Kuramathi joined Versa Hospitality's new Niva brand in late 2025, and the island itself needed no rebranding. It runs 1.8 kilometres end to end and narrows at its western tip into a long natural sandbank, open water on both sides. Inland, a 300-year-old banyan tree shades the middle of the island, and buggies run guests between villas and dinner. Twelve restaurants, three of them buffets, mean a week can pass without eating in the same place twice. Size has a downside here. aMaldives reports occasional crowding at the buffets at peak times, and from one edge of the island a neighboring inhabited island is in view. Turtles and reef sharks turn up on the house reef, which can be reached from much of the shore. Ask which part of the island a villa sits in before booking, because on an island this long the walk to dinner varies widely.
Ideal for: Couples who would take choice over quiet.
2. Cocoon Maldives
Location: Lhaviyani Atoll
There is no house reef at Cocoon, and every snorkel starts with a ten-minute boat ride. What the resort offers instead is design. Every villa is furnished by the Italian house LAGO in earthy browns and creams lifted by turquoise, with beds that seem to float on slender glass legs and basins where water slides off a slanted glass surface and vanishes. In the bar, the floor is soft sand that carries straight on to the beach. The Lagoon Suite with Slide is the photogenic category, dropping guests from the deck into the lagoon. Of the two all-inclusive tiers, XXL adds premium wines and daily excursions, the sensible choice when the reef is a boat ride away anyway. The All-Inclusive Guide judged that Cocoon "punches above its weight on food," with dinner rotating between themed buffets at Octopus and overwater fine dining at The Manta. The seaplane from Malé takes about half an hour.
🥂 For Anniversaries & Special Occasions
These two full-island resorts are built for couples who want a real occasion marked — multiple restaurants, a longer stay's worth of variety, and genuinely photogenic moments built into the package.
3. LUX* South Ari Atoll
Location: South Ari Atoll, on the island of Dhidhoofinolhu
Whale sharks gather off South Ari all year, and the resort bills the area as the world's only year-round aggregation site. Marine biologists lead three-hour trips out on traditional dhoni boats, and sightings are never certain, so book one in the first days of a stay to leave time for a second try. For an anniversary that needs one headline moment, nothing else on this list competes. LUX* has Dhidhoofinolhu to itself, with 193 villas spread along the beach and out over the lagoon, and some of the overwater ones have glass panels in the floor. Eight restaurants run from Southeast Asian plates at East Market to Japanese at Umami. The LUX* Me spa, with treatment rooms out over the water, is one of only three spas in the Maldives with a Forbes four-star rating. Seaplanes reach the island in about 25 minutes.
Best for: Couples marking a milestone who want plenty to do between dinners.
4. Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa
Location: Raa Atoll, on the island of Fasmendhoo
On the Deluxe All-Inclusive plan, nobody signs a bill anywhere on Fasmendhoo. The plan takes in all four restaurants, premium spirits and an international wine list, and the in-room minibar is restocked every day with wine, beer and snacks. No other resort here takes money so completely out of an occasion. Dinner moves from the buffet and cooking stations at Aqua to Asian dishes at Le Asiatique and Brazilian barbecue at Amazònico. The 120 villas split between the beach and the water across 11 categories. The house reef has shallow stretches that suit beginners. Trips to Hanifaru Bay in neighboring Baa Atoll, for manta rays, are seasonal, so ask when they run before fixing dates. The seaplane from Malé takes around 35 minutes.
🐚 For Quiet, Away-From-It-All Seclusion
These three put distinctive villas and reef access ahead of scale and spectacle.
5. Angsana Velavaru
Location: Dhaalu Atoll, on two connected islands
The In-Ocean Villas stand nearly a kilometre out in the lagoon, linked to the main island only by a shuttle boat that runs back and forth. The distance is the point. Out there, each villa has water on every side, a hammock slung above the sea and steps down into the lagoon. Back on the island, the beach villas share thatched pavilions in pairs, each with its own veranda and garden behind. The PADI five-star Gold Palm dive centre runs trips across the atoll. Divers should book its excursions early in the stay. Five restaurants share the cooking, from Azzurro's Mediterranean menu to lobster at Funa and Maldivian dishes in Magoo Garden. Maldives Magazine flags limited vegetarian choices and some beach erosion near certain villas. Pick a seaplane arrival with daylight to spare, since the flight from Malé runs 35 to 45 minutes.
6. Radisson Blu Resort Maldives
Location: South Ari Atoll, on a small heart-shaped island
Every villa at Radisson Blu Resort Maldives has its own pool, all 128 of them, from the beach villas to the three-bedroom overwater ones. The resort opened on Huruelhi Island in August 2020, built around strong geometry and symmetry. Maldives Magazine found the house reef full of variety, its coral "untouched although slightly bleached." Two practical points come up in the same review. The current off the sunset-side water villas runs strong, so weaker swimmers may prefer the lagoon side, and the young island still has little vegetation. Seven restaurants and bars range from Kabuki for Japanese to Alifaan for Mediterranean. The 30-minute seaplane is the quick way in. A domestic flight to Maamigili and a 15-minute speedboat costs less.
Ideal for: Couples who want a private pool guaranteed at every villa category.
7. Adaaran Select Meedhupparu
Location: Raa Atoll
Twenty minutes is enough to walk all the way around Meedhupparu, and the house reef is reachable from several points along the shore, with the best coral on the north side. Lux Atolls lists turtles, reef sharks and eagle rays among the regulars. The 24-hour all-inclusive plan runs through five restaurants and three bars, from a buffet at Jaafaiy to Indian at Sufura. An infinity pool with a swim-up bar, a floodlit tennis court and a dive centre fill the days. Rooms are functional more than lavish, built to a four-star standard. Couples wanting more privacy can look at Adaaran Prestige Water Villas, an adults-only enclave of 20 villas on its own jetty with a separate restaurant and pool. It is the most straightforward island in this guide, with no concept to explain. The seaplane takes about 45 minutes, and a domestic flight plus a 45-minute speedboat is the cheaper alternative.
Best for: Couples who want reef and beach without the extras.
🚤 For Couples Who Don't Want to Lose a Day to Transfers
Seaplanes keep daylight hours, and these three avoid them, two by speedboat and one by domestic flight.
8. Niva Velassaru Maldives
Location: Kaafu Atoll, 25–30 minutes by speedboat from Malé
Velassaru took the Niva name in late 2025, when Universal Resorts became Versa Hospitality and launched the brand. The speedboat from Malé takes roughly 20 minutes, short enough to be on the sand the same evening as a late landing. The beach pool villas have freestanding tubs and plunge pools facing the sand, while the water villas are brighter, with floor-to-ceiling windows and steps into the lagoon. The trade for that short ride is the view. From about half the island, the industrial skyline of Thilafushi is visible across the water, and Voyager Guru found no house reef open to guests. Sora, the Japanese restaurant, keeps a teppanyaki table, worth reserving on arrival night when nobody wants a long dinner. For a short trip with a late flight in, nothing here is more sensible.
Best for: Short stays and evening arrivals.
9. Kuda Villingili Resort Maldives
Location: North Malé Atoll, on four connected islands
The pool at Kuda Villingili runs 150 metres, lined with sun loungers, cabanas and bars. The resort opened in June 2021, designed by the Maldivian firm GX Associates with interiors by Singapore's URBNarc, who worked traditional Maldivian textiles and art into light woods and marble. Spa treatments take place in eight overwater villas, and dining spreads across seven venues, Med and the Japanese-Peruvian Mar-Umi among them. Spear's liked that guests can do "as much or as little as they like." The speedboat from the airport takes around 30 minutes. Groups and families should look at the three-bedroom beachside residence, which comes with a private pool and sleeps up to nine.
10. Kandima Maldives
Location: Dhaalu Atoll, on a 3-kilometer-long island
Kandima calls itself a lifestyle resort, and it packs in things few islands attempt. There's a 100-metre pool and an electric go-kart circuit called Fast Track. The KULA Art Studio runs classes for guests, and a marine biology centre runs a coral adoption programme. Flying foxes flit between the palms, and Woman & Home's reviewer counted a spinner-dolphin cruise among the best moments of the trip. Getting there means a short domestic flight to Dhaalu and then a half-hour speedboat, a fixed timetable that never depends on seaplane daylight. aMaldives notes that some à la carte menus, Smoked among them, run pricey. The same Woman & Home review found Flavour, the main food hall, "slightly stuffy" in June with only ceiling fans. With 272 villas, it is the least secluded island here by design. For a quieter corner, book a Honeymoon Aqua Pool Villa, set above the lagoon with a private pool.
Ideal for: Couples who want activity alongside the lagoon.
Where the Shortlist Starts
Best for a Milestone Trip: LUX* South Ari Atoll. A whole island in South Ari, with biologists taking the dhonis out to find whale sharks.
Best for a Design-Led Honeymoon: Cocoon Maldives. Italian furniture in every villa, plus a lagoon suite that ends in a splash.
Best for an Occasion Without a Running Bill: Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa. The Deluxe plan restocks the minibar daily and covers dinner wherever it happens.
The Seaplane Question
What separates these ten is the length of the journey and the amount of company waiting at the end of it. Kuda Villingili and Velassaru are a speedboat ride from the airport; Angsana Velavaru puts its best villas a kilometre out to sea, and Kuramathi strings 350 villas along a single island.
Decide how many hours of travel the trip can spare, then pick the island, because in the Maldives everything else is easier to fix.
