Bali: Rice Terraces, Cliffside Temples, Endless Green

Choosing a hotel in Bali mostly means choosing a stretch of the island. Ubud sits among river valleys and jungle, Uluwatu perches on limestone cliffs above the surf, and Nusa Dua and Jimbaran line the calm water of the south. The ten luxury hotels in Bali below are grouped by the kind of trip they suit, and each was checked against current guest ratings and published reviews.

Distance on a Bali map says little about time on the road. The southern resort areas sit roughly 15 to 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, while the final approach to the Uluwatu cliffs narrows into a winding lane and West Bali takes a long drive north-west. Plan arrivals around daylight where possible, and expect tax and service charges on top of restaurant and spa bills at most resorts.

Where on the Island the Trip Happens

Honeymoons. Private pool villas and quiet settings, in the jungle outside Ubud or on a nearly empty western beach.

Anniversaries and special occasions. Landmark resorts with clifftop drama and a few signature evenings worth planning around.

Easy southern beaches. Established resorts along the southern coast, a short ride from the airport and built for easy days by the water.

The 10 Best Luxury Hotels in Bali

💑 For Honeymoons & First Trips Together

These three put privacy ahead of nightlife.

1. Kelapa Retreat & Spa

Location: Pekutatan, West Bali

"Tropical modernism meets Miami cool," The Hotel Guru says of Kelapa, and the white-on-white villas with floor-to-ceiling glass back that up. The setting matters more than the design, though. Kelapa sits on Pulukan, which the same review counts among Bali's most deserted beaches, on a western coast most visitors never reach. Each of the 23 villas has a pool a few steps from the bed, and an infinity pool looks over the beach. Tides, the oceanfront restaurant, serves Indonesian dishes with a few Western ones, and that is most of the choice for dinner. Medewi, one of the island's best-known surf breaks, is about five minutes away, close enough for the hotel's bikes. Airport transfers cost extra and the drive is long, so book one before landing.

Ideal for: Couples who would give up nightlife for an empty beach.

2. Ubud Nyuh Bali Resort & Spa

Location: Ubud, near the Monkey Forest

One guest describes the grounds as "an amazing flowered jungle," and others say the planting is so thick that the paths can be hard to get around. Ubud Nyuh sits in Lodtunduh, south of central Ubud, about a 13-minute drive from the Monkey Forest. Every room has a balcony, and the larger villas, up to a four-bedroom family villa, come with private pools. Yoga runs at the gym, and bikes are free to borrow. Mahamaya Spa has three treatment rooms, couples' rooms among them. Guest reviews keep returning to the staff, several of them by name. There are no lifts, so travelers with heavy luggage or limited mobility should ask for a ground-floor room. A guest review mentions a free shuttle into central Ubud, which is worth confirming at booking.

3. Renaissance Bali Uluwatu Resort & Spa

Location: Uluwatu, on the clifftop

Reception opens straight onto the Indian Ocean, a wide panorama of sea before check-in is even done. Lower down, the Jungle Pool looks the other way, over green hills toward the distant coast. Balinese double ikat weaving runs through an otherwise contemporary design. Double Ikat, the restaurant named for it, cooks Balinese and Indonesian food in an open kitchen and runs cooking classes, while Clay Craft serves international dishes and the Clay Studio offers pottery classes. Luxury Travel Diary found "little to walk to nearby," and the last stretch of road in is narrow and winding. The resort's Roosterfish Beach Club is a 20-minute shuttle ride away, though the same review notes it has no sandy beach and plays its music fairly loud. The shuttle stops at 7pm, so spend the afternoon at the beach club and come back to the clifftop for sunset.

Best for: Clifftop views without the formality of a palace resort.

🪷 For Anniversaries & Special Occasions

Two landmark resorts on the Bukit side of the island, each with a signature setting for a big night.

4. The Apurva Kempinski Bali

Location: Nusa Dua, clifftop and beachfront

A grand staircase carries The Apurva Kempinski down the Nusa Dua cliff to the sea, a layout the hotel itself calls a "majestic open-air theatre." The design draws on Indonesia's tropical landscape with modern touches. Of the 465 rooms, suites and villas, 176 suites and 43 villas have private pools, and 48 Grand Deluxe Rooms open straight onto a lagoon pool. Koral, billed as Bali's first aquarium restaurant, serves coastal Indonesian cooking beside the tanks, and it is the table to book first for an anniversary. Bai Yun handles dim sum and hotpot, Izakaya by OKU serves Japanese food, and L'Atelier on the top floor does Mediterranean tapas. In 2024 the resort became the first hotel in Indonesia to earn Global Sustainable Tourism Council certification. Uluwatu Temple and its Kecak fire dance are within driving distance for an evening off the property.

5. AYANA Resort Bali

Location: Jimbaran, on its own private peninsula

Rock Bar sits 14 metres above the Indian Ocean on the Jimbaran cliffs, reached by an inclinator or by stairs. The queue for the inclinator builds ahead of sunset, but AYANA guests skip it and get reserved seats near the main bar. Arrive well before the sun drops to pick a spot. After dark, live bands take over the raised Round Bar, and a dress code applies throughout, so pack something smarter than beachwear. The resort itself has 294 rooms and suites, part of a larger estate. A free shuttle runs every ten minutes or so between it, RIMBA by AYANA, AYANA Segara and the Kubu Beach Club, and the estate counts more than 30 places to eat. That is enough for a week of anniversary dinners without a repeat. Kubu Beach sits at the foot of the cliff, reached by inclinator or 197 steps.

Ideal for: Couples planning an occasion around the island's most famous sunset bar.

🏖️ For Easy Beach Access & Reliable Comfort

Five resorts on the calm southern shore, each built around sand and pools.

6. Courtyard by Marriott Bali Nusa Dua Resort

Location: Nusa Dua, edge of the resort complex

Courtyard is not on the sand. Its private beach club on Nusa Dua Beach is about three minutes away by free shuttle, or ten on foot. At the hotel, a large freeform lagoon pool anchors the grounds, with decks in sun and shade and a bar at the water's edge. All 246 rooms have a balcony or terrace, and entry-level Deluxe Rooms start at 35 square metres. Oyster found the rooms "a bit cookie-cutter modern," with bland art and little to tell one from the next, and breakfast is not included. There is no sauna or steam room either. Ask for a pool-view room, since the lagoon is the hotel's best feature.

7. Paradisus by Meliá Bali

Location: Nusa Dua, directly on the beach

The former Meliá Bali reopened on 3 February 2026 as the first Paradisus resort in Asia, and it now runs fully all-inclusive. Eight restaurants, room service around the clock and a daily minibar refresh are covered, while spa treatments and premium spirits cost extra. The 492 suites and seven villas face the beach, where low tide limits swimming along parts of the shore. Four pools include an adults-only one for Reserve guests, who also get their own beach section, lounge and restaurant, Sante. The All-Inclusive Guide warns that the two-tier set-up can leave everyone else feeling second-class. Early reviews call breakfast average. Some booking sites show room-only rates that look cheaper, so check that "all-inclusive" appears on the confirmation. With less than a year of operation behind it, the resort is still settling in.

Ideal for: Travelers who want every meal settled before they arrive.

8. Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort

Location: Nusa Dua, beachfront

Kwee Zeen never closes, which matters after a late landing. Sofitel sits right on the Nusa Dua beachfront, with padded loungers and palapas on the sand and a swim-up bar in the big outdoor pool. Cut Catch Cucina handles brunch and dinner with seafood, steaks and Italian dishes, and a semi-open rooftop bar is the spot for sunset. Some of the 451 rooms open directly onto the lagoon pool, and the higher categories add butler service and private pools. Oyster notes that breakfast costs extra and that the resort gets busy in school holidays, when the breakfast room can turn hectic. The Pasifika Museum is a 20-minute walk, Uluwatu about a 40-minute drive. If a quiet pool matters, book outside the school-holiday weeks.

9. Conrad Bali

Location: Tanjung Benoa, Nusa Dua

Ground-level suites at Conrad Bali open straight from their patios onto the main pool, a lagoon-shaped stretch that faces the beach. Bali Dave calls that beach "virtually private for guests," well away from the jet skis and boats farther south along Tanjung Benoa. Four pools spread through the grounds, among them an adults-only pool and two lined with gazebos beside the suite wing. East, the lobby cocktail bar, has a wide balcony over the sea. The resort leans family-friendly, with an upmarket package-holiday feel. Shopping nearby is mostly minimarts, and the Bali Collection mall is less than two kilometres south. A handful of local restaurants sit within a few hundred metres for nights off the property. Book a ground-floor suite with lagoon access, the category that gets the most out of the pool.

10. InterContinental Bali Resort

Location: Jimbaran Bay, beachfront

Six pools spread across the grounds of InterContinental Bali, among them the main beachfront pool, a Balinese bathing pool and a members-only one. More than 400 keys fill low-rise blocks among the gardens, and the two-level Jivana Villas sit a few metres from the beach. Most rooms look over gardens, lawns or pools instead of the sea, according to Bali Dave, and the buildings stand close together. The beach in front is narrow and public, with calm water. KO does teppanyaki and Japanese plates, Bella Cucina does Italian, and Sunset Beach Bar & Grill has seafood and live music. The airport is roughly 15 minutes by car, handy for a late flight out, and for seafood on the sand the Muaya Beach grills are about 200 metres south along the shore.

Three Bali Stays to Book First

Best for a First Bali Trip: The Apurva Kempinski Bali. A cliff-to-sea staircase, dinner beside aquarium tanks and more than 200 rooms with pools of their own.

Best for Seclusion: Kelapa Retreat & Spa. Two dozen white villas on a West Bali coast that tour buses rarely reach.

Best for a Sunset Toast: AYANA Resort Bali. Rock Bar above the waves at Jimbaran, with resort guests waved past the inclinator queue.

Pick the Coast Before the Hotel

What separates these ten is the landscape outside the door, whether jungle, cliff or calm southern sand, and how far a trip is willing to drive for it.

In Bali, the drive is the hidden cost of every booking, so choose the coast first and let the hotel follow.
